Australian legend Shane Warne expresses his desire to become England’s head coach

The search for the England men’s cricket team head coach has been active since Chris Silverwood stepped down from the post following England’s humiliating 4-0 defeat against Australia in the 2021/22 Ashes.

Silverwood’s departure was one among many changes England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) took, including the absence of veteran pacers James Anderson and Stuart Broad from the English red-ball squad for the upcoming series against West Indies.

As the ECB is currently searching for an ideal candidate to become England’s next head coach, former Australia spinner and a legend of the game, Shane Warne has expressed his desire to coach the Englishmen.

Warne has thrown his hat for the position, claiming that he would do a better job. Warne reckoned the England team has a lot of depth and talent, but they need to get some basics right for which he can assist and coach the side.

“I’d like to do it, it’s a great time to be England coach. I think I’d do a pretty good job, there’s a lot to work with. There are so many good players in England and a lot of depth, but you’ve got to get some of the basics right. You can’t bowl no-balls and drop so many catches, but you’ve got the players, they’re just not performing,” said Warne on the Sky Sports cricket podcast.

Notably, Warne has plenty of experience in the coaching arena as he has mentored many major teams like Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and London Spirit in The Hundred.

While Warne has expressed his desire by himself, various media reports claim that former Australian coach Justin Langer is also a contender for England’s head coach role. Speaking about his old teammate Langer, Warne heavily criticised Cricket Australia (CA) for the way they handled Langer, especially after the Ashes series win and the World Cup title triumph.

“Cricket Australia were disgraceful in the way they handled it. Winning an Ashes series and a World Cup, it doesn’t get much bigger than that. But [Langer] was a dead man walking. When I didn’t hear the captain or any other players sticking up for him, saying he was fantastic, I found that really disappointing,” added Warne.
