In the ninth match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022, Rajasthan Royals (RR) thrashed Mumbai Indians (MI) by 23 runs at Dr DY Patil Sports Academy in Mumbai on Saturday.
Chasing a big total of 194, opener Ishan Kishan and youngster Tilak Verma batted exceptionally well to take Mumbai close to what could be a memorable victory. Kishan smashed 54 off 43 balls, while Tilak scored 61 from 33 deliveries, but after their dismissals, MI lost track and fell 23 runs short of the target.
For Rajasthan, spinner Yuzvendra Chahal almost picked up a hat-trick by dismissing two wickets on consecutive balls in the 16th over. But Karun Nair, at slips, dropped a catch to deny Yuzvendra his maiden hat-trick in the lucrative league.
Earlier, Jos Buttler smashed his first century of the ongoing fifteenth season and second overall in the cash-rich league. The opening batter took the MI bowling attack to the cleaners, smashing five sixes and 11 fours en route to his 68-ball 100.
Captain Sanju Samson (30 off 21) and Shimron Hetmyer (35 off 14) also chipped in with valuable contributions as Rajasthan posted a massive 193/8 on the board in their allotted 20 overs.
Hundreds by England players in IPL:
- Kevin Pietersen: 103* vs Deccan Chargers, 2012
- Ben Stokes: 103* vs Gujarat Lions, 2017
- Jonny Bairstow: 114 vs Royal Challengers Bangalore 2019
- Ben Stokes: 107* vs Mumbai Indians, 2020
- Jos Buttler: 124 vs Sunrisers Hyderabad, 2021
- Jos Buttler: 100 vs Mumbai Indians 2022
“Obviously a great feeling and nice to contribute. I’m a bit nervous as it is hard to tell if it is a good score or not with the short boundary on one side. Mumbai always attack me with Bumrah, he’s one of the best bowlers in the world, and I find him hard to attack, and that (Thampi) over the leg-side boundary was short, and I decided to target that,” Buttler was quoted as saying after the first innings.

Risk-free cricket and still very effective, that’s how Jos Buttler was. No wonder he is one of the best white-ball cricketer at the moment. @rajasthanroyals #RRvsMI #MIvsRR
