Team India have lost one point on the World Test Championship (WTC) table for a slow overrate in the recently concluded first Test against South Africa at SuperSport Park in Centurion.
Notably, India had breached the fortress at Centurion after defeating the Proteas by 113 runs to register their first-ever victory at the venue.
The touring party were deemed to be one over short of their target in the match. Further, the players were also fined 20% of their match fee. Umpires Marais Erasmus, Adrian Holdstock, Allahudien Paleker and Bongani Jele had levelled the charge while the sanctions were imposed by match referee Andy Pycroft. Indian captain Virat Kohli accepted the offence and sanction, so there was no formal hearing.
“In accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum overrate offences, players are fined 20 per cent of their match fees for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time” the ICC said in a release.
“In addition, as per Article 16.11 of the ICC Men’s World Test Championship Playing Conditions, a side is penalised one point for each over short. Consequently, India will lose one point from their points tally for this offence. Umpires Marais Erasmus, Adrian Holdstock, Allahudien Paleker and Bongani Jele levelled the charge,” the release added.
India have now lost a total of three points for maintaining a slow overrate in the ongoing second cycle of WTC. They had lost two points after the Nottingham Test in England. India now have 53 points after four wins, one loss and two drawn Tests in WTC 2021-23.
India will play two more Tests against South Africa from January 3 in Johannesburg and January 11 in Cape Town.
