In the second match of the ongoing SA20 2023, Joburg Super Kings defeated Durban Super Giants by 16 runs at Kingsmead on Wednesday.

Batting first, the Super Kings started terribly with half of their side back in the pavilion inside 14 overs for just 99. The big total looked surely out of the picture, but Donavon Ferreira turned the tables.

The wicketkeeper-batter came up with a counterattack, taking the Super Giants’ bowling attack to the cleaners. Ferreira left no stone unturned to cruise Super Kings to a massive total. He formed a game-changing 87-run stand for the sixth wicket with Romario Shepherd, who smacked 40 off 20, including 2 fours and 4 sixes. Ferreira, on the other hand, remained unbeaten at a jaw-dropping 40-ball 82-run knock with the help of eight fours and five gigantic sixes.

In response, Kyle Mayers and skipper Quinton de Kock took the Super Giants off to a flyer, expressing their clear intentions of finishing the game early. The duo went on to add 98 runs for the opening wicket in 11 overs as the home team looked in a comfortable position to chase down the target.

However, as soon as Mayers and De Kock were dismissed, the middle-order couldn’t handle the heat as Super Giants only managed to reach 174/5, losing the contest by 16 runs. De Kock was the chief contributor with quickfire 78 from 52 deliveries, including five fours and as many maximums. For the Faf du Plessis-led side, Alzarri Joseph picked up two wickets for 30 in his quota of 4 overs.

“Felt quite good. Just trying to focus on my game, the coaching staff picked me for a reason and I will do what I just needed to do. I like playing a positive brand of cricket, I just looked to hit straight and fortunately it came off,” said Ferreira after bagging the Player of the Match.
