In a high-voltage contest, Mumbai Indians (MI) steamrolled Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to knock the defending champions out of the playoffs race in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 on Thursday.

Bowling first, the Rohit Sharma-led side completely dominated the proceedings, bundling out the Super Kings for their second-lowest total in the history of the cash-rich league. Daniel Sams was the pick of the bowler for MI, taking a brilliant three-wicket haul while conceding only 16 runs in his quota of 4 overs.

Apart from Sams, Riley Meredith (2/27) and Kumar Kartikeya (2/22) bagged a couple of scalps each to demoralise the CSK batting. Only four batters from the defending champions could score in double digits, with captain MS Dhoni hitting a maximum of 36 runs not out from 33 balls.

CSK’s lowest totals:

  • 79 – vs MI Wankhede Stadium 2013
  • 97 – vs MI Wankhede Stadium 2022*
  • 109 – vs RR Jaipur 2008
  • 109 – vs MI Chepauk 2019

In response, the Super Kings did give some early shakeups to Mumbai, reducing them to 33/4 inside the powerplay.

But the low score wasn’t enough to build enough pressure as MI eventually managed to gun down the target with five wickets in hand and 31 balls to spare. Youngster Tilak Varma played a handy knock of unbeaten 34 to take MI home.

Despite nothing much on the board, pacer Mukesh Choudhary was impressive with the ball for CSK. The left-armer bagged three wickets for just 23 runs in his quota of 4 overs.
