After losing the series opener, Sri Lanka came back strongly and defeated Australia in the second and final Test by an innings and 39 runs to level the series 1-1. Senior batter Dinesh Chandimal and debutant Prabath Jayasuriya were the main architects behind the epic victory of the Islanders at Galle International Stadium.
In reply to Australia’s 364, Chandimal smashed a tremendous double century to power Sri Lanka to a massive 554 in their first innings. Chandimal, who became the first Sri Lankan to hit a maiden double ton against the Aussies, remained unbeaten on 206 and gave the Islanders a 190 runs lead.
In response to the hosts first innings total, the visitors were bundled out for a mere 151, losing the contest by an innings and 39 runs. Debutant Jayasuriya, who picked up a six-wicket haul in the first innings, continued his golden run with the ball and exhibited another dominant performance in the second essay.
Jayasuriya bagged another six-wicket haul to completely crush the tourists, leading his side to a remarkable victory. Overall, the left-arm spinner picked up 12 wickets in the match and marked his grand arrival in the longest format.
Sri Lanka 554 (Chandimal 206*, Karunaratne 86, Kusal Mendis 85, Starc 4-89, Swepson 3-103) beat Australia 364 (Smith 145, Labuschagne 104, Jayasuriya 6-118) and 151 (Labuschagne 32, Jayasuriya 6-59, Theekshana 2-28, Ramesh Mendis 2-47) by an innings and 39 runs.

Congratulations to Dinesh Chandimal on your test double century.
An amazing effort to score over 200 runs in one innings in notoriously difficult sub continent conditions.

6-118 and 6-59 | Prabath Jayasuriya is the first bowler in 34 years to take 6 wickets in both innings of a debut Test match. Last one was India’s Narendra Hirwani (8-61 & 8-75) against West Indies in Chennai in 1988. #SLvAus

After being bowled out in 22.5 overs in the last Test, to come back to the same venue and get 554 must feel pretty good.
An innings win over Australia to boot – great end to a fantastic tour. #SLvAUS pic.twitter.com/tUn8hf0bkC
