As many as 13 wickets fell on the opening day of the ongoing first Test between Sri Lanka and Australia in Galle, with spinners completely dominating the proceedings. Nathan Lyon and Mitchell Swepson shone for the visitors, picking up eight wickets between them as Sri Lanka’s top-order crumbled.

Lyon picked up a brilliant five-wicket haul as the hosts were bundled out for 212. The right-arm spinner gave away 90 runs in 25 overs, including two maidens. Swepson also supported his fellow spinner, taking three scalps for 55 in 13 overs.

For the Islanders, Niroshan Dickwella was the only batter who could stand tall in front of the Aussie bowling attack. Dickwella scored 58 off 59 deliveries. Angelo Mathews (39) and captain Dimuth Karunaratne (28) played some handy knocks.

At Stumps, Australia were 98/3 with Usman Khawaja leading the charge with 47 not out, as the tourists are trailing by 114 runs. Ramesh Mendis picked up a couple of wickets for 35 in 11 overs.
