England broke their own world record for the highest score in ODI cricket after smashing a humungous 498/4 against the Netherlands in the opening game of the ongoing three-match series at VRA Cricket Ground in Amstelveen on Friday.

As many as three batters – Phil Salt (122 off 93), Dawid Malan (125 off 109), and Jos Buttler (162 not out of 70 balls) – smashed centuries while Liam Livingstone (66not out off 22 balls) provided finishing touches as England went on to post the highest total in ODI history, beating their own record of 481/6 they had piled on against Australia at Trent Bridge in 2018.

Highest team totals in ODIs:

  • 498/4 – England against Netherlands, 2022
  • 481/6 – England against Australia, 2018
  • 444/3 – England against Pakistan, 2016
  • 443/9 – Sri Lanka against Netherlands, 2006
  • 439/2 – South Africa against West Indies, 2015

In response, the Netherlands could only manage to reach 266 in 49.4 overs, to lose the contest by a big margin of 232 runs.

Wicketkeeper-batter Scott Edwards (72) and Max Odowd (55) smashed respective half-centuries, but it wasn’t enough to reach even near the total of England. English all-rounder Moeen Ali picked up three wickets for 57 runs in his quota of 10 overs.
