Team India defeated West Indies in the first ODI of the three-match by six wickets at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday.
Chasing a paltry target of 177, the hosts made a tremendous start with skipper Rohit Sharma (60) leading from the front. Rohit, along with Ishan Kishan, formed a dominating partnership of 84 runs for the opening wicket in just 13 overs.
However, at the start of the 14th over, the partnership was broken by Alzarri Joseph as he got rid of the Indian captain. Joseph didn’t stop there as he soon sent back former skipper Virat Kohli (8), who failed to impress with the willow.
The hosts lost Kishan (28) and Rishabh Pant (11) in quick successions before Suryakumar Yadav (34 no) and debutant Deepak Hooda (26 no) added an unbeaten 62-run stand to take India over the finish line.
Earlier, put in to bat first, the West Indies batting unit never looked settled as they got bundled out for just 176 in 43.5 overs. All-rounder Jason Holder was the top scorer for his side with 57 off 71 balls, including four sixes. Apart from Holder, Fabian Allen chipped in with a valuable 29 off 43 deliveries.
For the home team, Yuzvendra Chahal and Washington Sundar were the pick of the bowlers. Chahal bagged a four-wicket haul for 49 runs in 9.5 overs, dismissing Brooks (12), Nicholas Pooran (18), Kieron Pollard (0) and Joseph (13).
On the other hand, Sundar picked up three wickets while conceding 30 runs in nine overs, including a maiden. The pace duo of Prasidh Krishna (2/29) and Mohammad Siraj (1/26) shared three wickets.

India becomes the first team to play 1000 men’s ODIs.
Among all full-member teams at the time when ODIs began, India was ironically the last team to play their maiden ODI match (v ENG in 1974).#INDvWI— Kausthub Gudipati (@kaustats) February 6, 2022
