Opener Shubman Gill, debutant Shreyas Iyer and all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja all shined with the bat as India looked strong with 258/4 on Day 1 of the ongoing first Test against New Zealand at Green Park in Kanpur.

Iyer and Jadeja both scored half-centuries to put India ahead of Black Caps in the final session after the visitors grabbed back to back wickets just before the tea break. Iyer and Jaddu put together an unbeaten partnership of 113 runs for the fifth wicket before the umpires called for early stumps due to bad light.

Iyer, who was on his debut in the longest format, cashed in the opportunity and batted extremely well. He remained unbeaten on 75 with the help of seven fours and two sixes. Along with the Mumbaikar batter, Jadeja was also batting on 50 not out with the help of six boundaries.

Earlier, Tim Southee and Kyle Jamieson provided New Zealand with quick breakthroughs. While Southee dismissed Cheteshwar Pujara (26), Jamieson got rid of Mayank Agarwal (13) and captain Ajinkya Rahane (35).

Gill batted well at the top and scored yet another half-century of his career before Jamieson cleaned him up.

“Not a huge amount going on. Found some swing early and it was up and down a little bit. Hardly played the last couple of months. Nice to get back onto the park. Hopefully, the new ball swings a little bit in the morning and we can get them. India fraction ahead I think. We hung around pretty well. Need a good start in the morning,” said Jamieson after the end of the day’s play.
