Australia sealed the ongoing three-match ODI series against Zimbabwe after defeating the tourists by eight wickets at Tony Ireland Stadium in Townsville on Wednesday. The hosts, after opting to bowl first, bundled out Zimbabwe for a mere 96 in 27.5 overs.

In response, the Aaron Finch-led Australia chased down the paltry target inside 15 overs with eight wickets in hand. Steve Smith smashed an unbeaten 47 from 41 deliveries, including eight fours and a six.

Smith’s six off Richard Ngarava grabbed maximum eyeballs as it was a unique shot. While facing the left-arm seamer in the seventh over, the New South Wales cricketer made room for himself but collapsed in between his stroke. Despite losing his balance, Smith still managed to time the ball well and smashed it for a maximum over-point boundary.

“I thought it was clinical by the bowlers. The tone set by Starc and Hazlewood, then Starc, Green and Zampa – couldn’t have asked for anything better today. We have to be flexible, and we have to have different plans depending on the conditions. Think it’s an exciting prospect, we got the depth and resources, and it’s really exciting times. You just want to keep playing good cricket and just taking that momentum and win as many games,” said Australia skipper Aaron Finch after the game.
