West Indies pulled off their second victory in the ongoing ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2022 by defeating England in a low-scoring thriller at University Oval in Dunedin on Wednesday. The impressive win also helped the Caribbeans acquire the second spot in the points table, currently headed by Australia.
Batting first, West Indies, despite a remarkable opening stand of 81 runs between Deandra Dottin (31 off 64 balls) and Hayley Matthews (45 off 58 balls), managed to post only 225/6 on the board due to the middle-order failure.
The Stafanie Taylor-led side was struggling at one stage with four wickets down for 98 runs in 26.1 overs. Before England could capitalise further, the pair of Shemaine Campbelle and Chedean Nation came to the rescue and formed a scintillating partnership of 123 runs for the fifth wicket.
Campbelle was sent back by Natalie Sciver on 66 off 80 balls to break the dominating stand, but Chedean stayed unbeaten on 49 to take West Indies to a decent total. For the English side, Sophie Ecclestone was their pick of the bowlers, taking a brilliant three-wicket haul for 20 runs in her quota of 10 overs, including four maidens.
In reply, England’s lower order came to the fore after being reduced to 94/5 at one stage, courtesy of Matthews’s twin strikes. But, Shamilia Connell‘s crucial double-wicket over and Anisa Mohammed‘s final-over heroics steered West Indies to pull off the second consecutive win by seven runs in the multi-team tournament.
Connell went on to take three wickets while conceding 38 runs in her quota of 10 overs, including a maiden. Matthews (2/40) and Mohammed (2/24) also bagged a couple of scalps to help Windies register an incredible triumph.
“There was some pressure when I went out to bat, we had lost some quick wickets, and I tried to build a partnership. I gave myself a chance and played every ball on its merit. I knew as long as I stick in there, the runs would come. We both are quick between the wickets but had to manage her (Nation) injury, I thought she played a great knock for the team as well. I thought the girls were good in the field today, we took some good catches, but we just got to keep our nerve, and we did that,” said Campbelle after the match.
