The debate regarding who will open for India in the upcoming ODI World Cup 2022 is a hot topic among Indian cricket fans. Notably, there are three strong contenders for the opener spot in the form of captain Rohit Sharma, senior batter Shikhar Dhawan and stylish cricketer KL Rahul. While Rohit’s spot seems to be certain as he is the leader of the side, the competition will be between Dhawan and Rahul.

Meanwhile, former India all-rounder and 2011 ODI World Cup winner Yuvraj Singh has shared his take on the red-hot topic and suggested a different name for the opener spot. The Chandigarh-born cricketer has heaped rich praise on young star Shubman Gill, terming him as a strong contender to open for India in the upcoming global showpiece event.

Notably, Gill opened for India in the recently-concluded New Zealand series but is not a part of the ongoing ODI series in Bangladesh. So far, the right-handed batter has made the most of his ODI opportunities in 2022, scoring 638 runs in 12 matches at an impressive average of 70.88, including a century and four fifties.

“I think Shubman is doing very well and is performing consistently. I believe he is a strong contender to open for India in the 2023 World Cup,” Yuvraj was quoted as saying by the news agency PTI.

“Shubman is very hardworking and is doing all the right things. I believe he is destined for greatness in the next 10 years,” he added.

Yuvraj also showed his interest in developing aspiring cricketers, saying that he is open to work as a sports/cricket administrator.

“I can’t say what will happen in the future, but if I can help in the growth of sports in the country, I wouldn’t mind. But it is not just cricket, but I will like to help in the growth of sports in this country,” Yuvraj added further.
