Iconic cricketer MS Dhoni is renowned for his ability to control his emotions during matches, rarely displaying anger or distress while representing India or playing for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). His emotionally resilient demeanour adds to the unpredictability of his performance on the field.
However, Dhoni’s former teammate Harbhajan Singh has revealed an interesting incident mentioning about a noteworthy instance when the Ranchi-born superstar allowed his emotions to overcome him and even shed tears.
Harbhajan referred to the moment which took place in 2018 during the comeback of the Yellow Army in the cash-rich league. CSK were playing for the first time since their two-season suspension due to alleged participation in the IPL betting scandal. Imran Tahir, a former CSK star, who joined Bhajji, verified the narrative and expressed how this incident made him realize the strong bond shared by the team with Dhoni.
Harbhajan mentioned about the commonly held belief that men do not cry, but revealed how MSD shed tears on that night, confirming that this incident remained relatively unknown until he shared it.
“There is a story which I want to share. Back in 2018, when CSK made a comeback to this league after a 2-year ban, there was a team dinner. I have heard the saying that ‘Men don’t cry’, but MS Dhoni cried on that night. He became emotional. I think no one knows about this. Right, Imran (Tahir)?” said Harbhajan in a video shared by Star Sports.
Tahir emphasized that Dhoni considers the team as his family, and the emotional atmosphere impacted not only the veteran stumper but also the rest of the team, creating a poignant experience for all of them.
“Yes, of course. Even I was there. It was a very emotional moment for him (MS Dhoni). Looking at him like that, I came to know how close this team is to his heart. He considers the team as his family. It was very emotional for all of us,” Tahir revealed.
Tahir reflected on the perception among people that CSK consisted of older players, and despite the age-related label and potential doubts from outsiders, they won the trophy and he takes great pride in their victory.
“We came back after 2 years and won the trophy. And when people give your team the tag of ‘buddhe’ (old men), and even I was in the squad that season, but we won the title. I am very proud of that victory,” added Tahir.
