The highly anticipated news for the Indian Premier League (IPL) fans has arrived! IPL chairman Arun Dhumal has confirmed that a mega auction will take place ahead of the 2025 season.
Mega auction to shake up the IPL teams:
This mega auction will allow franchises to revamp their squads significantly. Each team will be able to retain only 3-4 players, while the remaining players will go under the hammer. The last mega auction in 2022 saw a record-breaking Rs 551 crore spent on 204 players, completely reshaping several teams.
Dhumal hopes for another grand auction:
Expressing his optimism, Dhumal expects the 2025 mega auction to be just as impactful as previous ones. He anticipates the introduction of exciting new talent, not just from India but also from overseas. Talking to Sportstar, Dhumal specifically mentioned the benefit such auctions provide to teams like Afghanistan, allowing them to showcase their players on a global stage.
“We will have the mega auction for sure, where you get to choose three-four players and then you have a new team. That makes it more interesting and that format will continue,” said Dhumal.
He added: “Hopefully, the mega auction will be as big and as good as we have had earlier given newer talents coming in not from India and other countries. Teams like Afghanistan have also benefited as they could showcase their talent.”

IPL 2024 Final dates aligned with the T20 World Cup:
Dhumal also confirmed the dates for the finale of IPL 2024 season. The tournament will kick off on March 22, with the opening match featuring Chennai Super Kings (CSK) led by MS Dhoni taking on Virat Kohli starrer Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).
Keeping in mind the upcoming T20 World Cup in West Indies and USA scheduled to begin on June 7, the IPL final will be held either on May 25th or 26th. This ensures players have sufficient time to travel and prepare for the ICC event.

“This time the challenge is that we are starting with the T20 World Cup in the first week of June, and we were planning to close the tournament by May 25 or May 26 as the team will have to travel to the US and that’s a different territory altogether.
“For the first time, the tournament will be held there and it’s a new thing, so the players need to be there early to have some sort of practice games ahead of the tournament,” Dhumal added further.
Fans can now gear up for an exciting IPL 2024 season, followed by the mega auction and a revamped IPL in 2025!
