During the match between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at Chepauk, KKR’s batters, who had been performing exceptionally well in the previous matches, unexpectedly faltered. Despite their impressive performance in other matches, these star batters looked completely out of sorts against the bowling attack of CSK in Chennai’s home ground.
KKR’s morale took a major hit on the very first ball of the match when Tushar Deshpande dismissed Phil Salt. This early setback seemed to have a profound impact on the KKR batters, who then struggled to regain their composure against the relentless CSK bowlers.
After facing many challenges with the bat, KKR scored just 137 runs in 20 overs at the loss of 9 wickets. This small target was chased easily by CSK batters in 17.5 overs, losing only three wickets.
Shreyas Iyer reveals the reason for the loss against CSK
When KKR captain Shreyas Iyer came to speak in the post-match presentation after an embarrassing defeat against the hosts, the skipper blamed the below-average performance of Kolkata batters for facing defeat against CSK. He admitted that they failed to study the field conditions of Chepauk and, hence, failed to score good runs in the match. They also lost wickets consecutively against CSK bowlers.
“We got a phenomenal start in the powerplay, but we lost consecutive wickets. We weren’t able to assess the conditions quickly after the powerplay, scoring runs wasn’t easy. They (CSK) know the conditions pretty well, they bowled according to their plans. Wasn’t easy to go after them from the first ball. We were trying to construct the innings, but it didn’t fall in place according to the plan,” Iyer said during the post-match conference.
