Veteran Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin showcased his prowess once again during Day 3 of the ongoing fourth Test match against England in Ranchi, picking up his 35th five-wicket haul in Test cricket. This remarkable feat comes as Ashwin stands on the cusp of a significant milestone – his 100th Test match for India, potentially to be played in Dharamsala.
India’s strong position
India’s dominant performance in the Test has put them in a commanding position. After bundling out England for 145 in their second innings, India have set themselves a target of 192 to win the Test. At stumps on Day 3, the opening pair of Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal remained unbeaten, having already wiped off 40 runs from the target.
Ravichandran Ashwin’s emotions and focus
Amidst the excitement of nearing his 100th Test, Ashwin expressed his primary focus on securing a victory in his 99th Test first. He emphasized the surreal feeling of winning a Test match after several days of hard-fought cricket, highlighting his desire to experience that sensation once again.
“You can pick as many wickets as you want but winning the Test match after 4-5 days, the feeling is surreal. I would like to have that feeling tomorrow. Ro (Rohit Sharma) and Jaiswal have started really well so hopefully they can carry on from here,” said Ashwin while speaking to the host broadcaster.

Sunil Gavaskar’s praise and Ashwin’s humility
Former Indian opener and currently the commentator Sunil Gavaskar showered praise on Ashwin, suggesting that it would be fitting for him to lead the team on the field during his milestone Test. While Ashwin appreciated the sentiment, he humbly stated that he had moved past expecting such honors, expressing his enjoyment of being part of the team regardless of individual accolades.
“You’re being too generous. Thank you so much. Have removed expectations from all these things. I think I am well past all that but genuinely saying I am enjoying every single moment I am being with this team and the longer it lasts, I will be very happy,” added Ashwin.
