Punjab Kings (PBKS) secured a magnificent victory over the Delhi Capitals (DC), on Saturday, which kept their prospects of qualifying for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 playoffs alive. The Capitals suffered a 31-run defeat, resulting in their elimination from the competition.

Prabhsimran Singh, the PBKS opener, smashed his debut IPL century – an impressive 103 – to help his team reach a total of 167/7 in 20 overs. In response, DC made a quick start to their innings and raced to 65/0 within the powerplay, thanks to captain David Warner‘s contribution of 54 runs.

However, DC’s batting lineup then struggled against the spinners of PBKS and could only score 136/7. Tweaker Harpreet Brar was their most successful bowler, who picked up 4 wickets for 30 runs. Similarly, Rahul Chahar and Nathan Ellis claimed two wickets each.

Following the match, former India opener Virender Sehwag made a fiery statement regarding Sam Curran’s performance. While Sehwag heaped praises on Prabhsimran’s century, he also delivered a sarcastic remark about IPL’s most-expensive player Curran.

Sehwag said that Prabhsimran has demonstrated his batting ability and provided a valuable contribution to his team, especially considering he was bought for only INR 60 lakh in contrast to Curranm who was bought for a significantly higher price (INR 18.5 crore).

“Punjab Kings have benefitted from the chances that they’ve given to Prabhsimran. Now, he has to be consistent. And I think the PBKS will benefit a lot from such a player. When he came for the first time, he was bought for a lot of money (INR 4.8 crore). This time around, he fetched quite less (INR 60 lakh). But he proved his talent today,” said Sehwag in a chat show on Cricbuzz.

“He showed that he can hit those centuries. Again, he was bought for INR 60 lakh, and if a player fetching that much scores hundreds and wins you a couple of games, there can be nothing better than that. You bought Sam Curran for 18.5 crores, what has he done?” he added.
