In the final match of the Asia Cup 2023 between India and Sri Lanka at Colombo’s R. Premadasa Stadium, fast bowler Mohammed Siraj delivered a remarkable performance that etched his name into the record books. Siraj achieved the fastest five-wicket haul in One Day International (ODI) cricket, leaving fans and cricket enthusiasts in awe.

During the high-stakes final clash, Sri Lanka opted to bat first after winning the toss, looking to set a formidable target for India. However, Siraj had other plans. He exhibited exceptional pace, swing and control over his deliveries, causing havoc in the Sri Lankan batting lineup.

Siraj claimed five wickets in just 16 deliveries, equalling the previous record for the fastest five-wicket haul in ODI history. His incredible spell of fast bowling left the Sri Lankan batsmen struggling to cope with his skill and pace.

Before Siraj, former Sri Lanka pacer Chaminda Vaas had set for record the quickest ODI five-for in ODI criket against Bangladesh in 2003.

Siraj picked up 4 wickets in an over

The 29-year-old pacer bowled with precision and aggression, taking  wickets at regular intervals. His remarkable bowling figures gave India the start they need in the summit clash against the home team.

Siraj first removed Pathum Nissanka on the first delivery of his second over and then followed it up with wickets of Charith Asalanka, Sadeera Samarawickrama, Dhananjaya de Silva and Dasun Shanaka to leave Sri Lanka reeling at 12 for six in 5.4 overs.

In the process, Siraj also completed his 50 wickets in the 50-overs format, reaching the landmark in his 29th ODI. Siraj (1002) is now the second-fastest male cricketer to claim 50 ODI wickets, only behind former Sri Lanka spinner Ajantha Mendis (847 balls).
