Aiden Markram‘s century and a formidable spin attack propelled South Africa to a convincing 111-run victory over Australia in the third One Day International at the JB Marks Oval on Tuesday, marking their first win in the five-game series. However, the match was also marred by a controversial dismissal involving Australia’s explosive batter, Tim David.

Batting first, South Africa established a significant 146-run opening partnership between Quinton de Kock (82) and Temba Bavuma (57), setting a solid foundation for their innings. Reeza Hendricks (39) and Marco Jansen (32) contributed valuable runs, but the star of South Africa’s batting was Markram, who remained unbeaten on 102 and propelled the hosts to a total of 338-6.

Australia’s strong response marred by unfortunate turn of events

Australia made a promising start to their chase, with notable contributions from David Warner (78), Travis Head (38), and Mitchell Marsh (29), taking them to 140/1. Nevertheless, the introduction of slower bowlers dramatically shifted the momentum of the game. Tabraiz Shamsi, in particular, dismissed captain Marsh and Marnus Labuschagne (15).

Nonetheless, South Africa had a stroke of luck when Warner was run out in a bizarre manner, losing a shoe in the process. While Warner’s dismissal was unfortunate for Australia, they were left feeling aggrieved later in the innings when David was given out for a score of eight after a contentious catch review.

Tim David’s disputed dismissal against South Africa

In theIn an attempt to halt Australia’s collapse, David launched a powerful pull shot on the second ball of the 29th over by Gerald Coetzee towards substitute fielder Imaad Fortuin at mid-wicket. At first glance, it appeared that Fortuin had taken an incredible low catch. The decision was then referred to the third umpire for review after replays suggested that the ball may have touched the ground. After a lengthy review process, to the surprise of many viewers, the third umpire ruled David out, further fueling controversy.

Cricket fans didn’t hesitate to express their dissatisfaction with the decision made by the officials. Unfortunately, Australia couldn’t bounce back from this setback and was eventually bowled out for 227, with 15 overs still remaining in the game.
