The cricketing world remains intrigued by the question of whether Virat Kohli will break Sachin Tendulkar‘s legendary record of 100 international centuries. Former West Indies captain Brian Lara weighed in on the debate, expressing his thoughts about Kohli’s chances.

Sachin Tendulkar’s milestone feat

Tendulkar, a cricketing icon, retired with an unparalleled legacy that included 49 centuries in ODIs and 51 in Test cricket, making him the sole member of the exclusive 100 international centuries club. Tendulkar’s records have been considered nearly insurmountable, but Kohli has been the closest contender in recent years.

Virat Kohli’s pursuit and challenges

Kohli, having recently surpassed Tendulkar’s ODI century record during the ODI World Cup 2023, now stands at 80 international centuries. The 35-year-old Indian cricket stalwart, known for his exceptional fitness, has a few more years ahead of him in his career. However, the question of whether he can surpass Tendulkar’s monumental record remains a topic of speculation.

Brian Lara’s gives his assessment

Speaking on the matter, Lara acknowledged Kohli’s fitness and ability to play for another 4-5 years but deemed the task challenging.

“How old is Kohli now? 35, right? He has 80 but still needs 20. If he scores five centuries every year he’d need four more years to equal Tendulkar. Kohli will be 39 then. Tough job, very tough job,” Lara told Anandabazar Patrika.

Lara dismissed claims that Kohli could easily score 20 more centuries, emphasizing the enormity of the task. The Trinidadian cricket legend added: “Can’t say with certainty, no one can. Those saying Kohli will break Tendulkar’s 100-centuries record won’t be taking cricketing logic into account. 20 centuries seem a long way away. Most cricketers can’t score that in their entire career. I won’t be adventurous and say Kohli will do it.”

Lara’s wishes for Kohli

While Lara expressed doubts about Kohli reaching the 100-century landmark, he conveyed his best wishes to the Indian superstar and termed himself as a big fan of Kohli.

“Age doesn’t stop for anyone. Kohli will break many more records, but 100 centuries seem the most difficult one. My best wishes are with him. I’d be very happy if he could score 100 centuries like Tendulkar. Sachin was a dear friend, and like I said before, I’m a big fan of Kohli,” Lara concluded.
