In the lead-up to the IPL 2024 auction, AB de Villiers, the former South African batting maestro, has shared insights into potential strategic moves for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).

RCB’s persistent trophy dilemma and disappointing IPL 2023

Long associated with star-studded lineups, RCB has grappled with the elusive IPL trophy, enduring heartbreaks in the 2011 and 2016 finals. The recently concluded IPL 2023 added another layer of frustration for RCB, as despite a high-profile roster and substantial contracts, they stumbled on the final day of the league stage, missing out on the playoffs.

AB de Villiers identifies two players RCB should release before IPL 2024 auction

De Villiers proposes a strategic decision for RCB, suggesting the release of both Harshal Patel and Wanindu Hasaranga before the upcoming auction. Considering the combined hefty price tag of INR 21.50 crore for these players. The 39-year-old believes that freeing up these resources by returning them to the auction pool could provide RCB with additional flexibility.

“RCB paid a lump sum for them (Harshal and Hasaranga) and releasing them will free up the purse. This is where the scouting will come in and the pool of players they are looking at. They might also go back into the auction and buy both of them, but it can also backfire. Mr. Flower seems to have some plans up his sleeve and this seems one of them,” De Villiers said on his Youtube channel.

This strategic move would enable the franchise to explore a broader range of options and potentially strengthen key areas during the auction, marking a prudent approach to team-building for the upcoming IPL season.
