Following the disappointing end of the ODI World Cup 2023, questions have arisen regarding the future of stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in T20I cricket, especially with the looming T20I World Cup 2024, which is scheduled to be played in the USA and West Indies. The duo’s presence could instrumental in shaping India‘s campaign for the upcoming tournament.

Amidst the speculations and discussions surrounding the T20I future of Rohit and Virat, former Indian veteran Gautam Gambhir, known for his candid remarks, has weighed in on the matter. The Delhi-born cricketer, recognizing the significance of experience and leadership in a World Cup, has shared his insights on how the seasoned pair could play a pivotal role in India’s quest for T20I glory.

Gautam’s opinion on T20I future of Rohit and Virat

Gautam expressed his strong opinion, advocating for Virat and Rohit’s selection. He specifically shared his desire to see Rohit as the captain of Men in Blue in the grand tournament, underscoring that while Hardik Pandya has captained in T20Is, the Nagpur-born cricketer’s leadership is what he wishes to witness in the upcoming tournament.

“Absolutely, both [Kohli and Rohit] need to be picked, both should be picked. And, more importantly, I want to see Rohit Sharma captain in the T20 World Cup. Yes, Hardik Pandya has captained in T20Is, but I still want to see Rohit Sharma captain in the T20 World Cup,” Gambhir said during his interaction with Sportskeeda.

Gautam’s remarks on Rohit Sharma’s leadership

Gambhir further showered praise on Rohit for his outstanding batting performances and leadership attributes in the recently ended ODI World Cup, arguing that if the southpaw is chosen, it would naturally lead to the selection of Virat. The cricketer-turned-politician emphasized that if Rohit opts to participate in the T20 World Cup, he should be selected as a batter and appointed as the captain, underscoring the significance of the 35-year-old’s leadership role in the team.

“In this World Cup, he has showed that with his batting. If Rohit Sharma is picked, Virat Kohli will automatically get picked. If Rohit Sharma decides to play the T20 World Cup, he should be selected as a captain and not just as a batter.” the 42-year-old added.
