In a recent development that sent shockwaves through the cricketing fraternity, Kolkata Knight Riders decided to part ways with Shardul Thakur ahead of the IPL 2024 auction. The all-rounder, who commanded a staggering INR 10.75 crores in a high-profile transfer from Delhi Capitals to KKR ahead of IPL 2023, now finds himself without a team for the upcoming IPL edition.

Despite his future uncertainty, speculations are high that the 32-year-old might emerge as a prime target in the forthcoming IPL auction, with several franchises eyeing his versatile skills. Amidst the fervent anticipation, cricketer-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra has weighed in on the situation, suggesting a potential reunion between Shardul and his former franchise, Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

Having been an integral part of the CSK squad from 2018 to 2021, Shardul’s return to the yellow brigade would rekindle the association with the MS Dhoni-led side, that was disrupted by his stint with the other teams.

‘Don’t be surprised if they pick Shardul Thakur’ Aakash Chopra on CSK

Chopra shared his insights into CSK’s potential strategy for the IPL 2024 auction, emphasizing their need for fast bowlers. He suggested that the Chennai-based team might target experienced players, either overseas or Indian. The 46-year-old pointed out the possibility of them securing Shardul, considering his past association with the team and their significant budget of 31.4 crore rupees.

“They (CSK) need fast bowlers. It could be overseas or Indian. They will definitely go shopping for fast bowlers. They generally go towards experienced players. So don’t be surprised if they pick Shardul Thakur because 31.4 crore rupees is a lot and Shardul Thakur was also earlier part of this team,” Chopra mentioned while speaking on the AakashVani show on Sports 18.

Shardul Thakur’s below-par performance in IPL 2023

Shardul’s performance in IPL 2023 was disappointing, as the latter struggled to make a significant impact on the field. Throughout ten games, the Palghar-born cricketer scored only 113 runs with an average of 14.13, showcasing a challenging run with the bat. Additionally, his bowling figures also raised concerns, as he secured seven wickets in nine games, failing to provide constant and major breakthroughs to his side.
