Bad light has ended play at 5:30 PM local time.It was finally a day when Sri Lanka played better than England even though the visitors continue to remain in control. Sri Lanka’s improved show was largely due to Dilruwan Perera’s four-fer which helped bundle out the hosts in the morning session despite Joe Root’s 228 and half-centuries by Kusal Perera and Lahiru Thirimanne. At 156 for 2, the hosts still trail by 130 runs.
WICKETJack Leach’s persistence finally pays off. He gets the ball to pitch, turn and bounce and induce the outside edge of the bat to the ‘keeper. Kusal Mendis hung around for more than an hour but managed to score only 15.155 for 2
HALF CENTURY STAND:Lahiru Thirmanne has progressed smoothly even after the fall of Kusal Perera to help Sri Lanka past the 150-run mark. He has had the company of Kusal Mendis, who has got off the mark after registering four successive ducks, and stitched a half-century stand for the second wicket.
WICKETKusal Perera couldn’t hold on to his patient game for long after tea. He attempted to go after a wide delivery outside off and found a fielder at deep backward point.101/1
FIFTY Kusal Perera has brought up a fine fifty. The attacking southpaw has controlled his aggression and applied himself well on this turner. A responsible innings by him.
Kusal Perera and Lahiru Thirmanne have picked the blueprint of attack and defense from Joe Root’s innings and applied it in Sri Lanka’s second essay. It has worked well for them and they have put on a half-century stand for the opening wicket.
Kusal Perera and Lahiru Thirmanne have started slow in the second innings, and not looked to attack the English bowlers unlike the approach the former had adopted in the previous innings.
ALL OUT England’s innings finally came to an end. Looking to slog the ball outside the ground, Joe Root holes out to the fielder at deep mid wicket. 228 for Joe Root. 421 for England. A lead of 286 runs. Lunch time.
Kumar Dharmasena isn’t having a great morning
DOUBLE TON:Even amidst the early fall of wickets, Joe Root has been aggressive in his approach and brings up his fourth Test double century with a boundary.
WICKETSAsitha Fernando has struck twice in two balls, dismissing Jos Buttler and Sam Curran. Just as England were going hard after the Sri Lankan bowlers, the ball lost shape and a new ball was taken. It has brought immediate success for the hosts.372/6
MILESTONE: With a two that helps him move to 177, Joe Root has brought up his 8000th run in Test cricket.
