Indian team has been hit with distressing news in a major setback ahead of their clash against Afghanistan in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 scheduled for Wednesday. Reports indicate that the star Indian opener Shubman Gill has been hospitalized due to a sudden drop in his platelet count.

Earlier on Monday, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) officially announced that the right-handed batter would not be travelling to Delhi and would instead remain under the close supervision of the medical team.

“Team India batter Shubman Gill will not be travelling with the team to Delhi on 9th October 2023. The opening batter who missed the team’s first fixture in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 against Australia in Chennai is set to miss the team’s next fixture against Afghanistan in Delhi on 11th October. He will stay back in Chennai and will be under the supervision of the medical team,” BCCI quoted in their statement.

Shubman admitted to medical facility

Subsequently, a PTI stated that Shubman  was admitted to the hospital due to a drop in his blood platelet count, which reached 100,000. This hospitalization was initiated as a precautionary measure, and he is expected to be discharged as soon as his platelet count crosses the 100,000 mark.

“Shubman Gill was on drip at the Chennai team hotel for the last couple of days. However his platelet count dropped to 70,000 and as it is a case with dengue patients, once the count is below 100,000, you are admitted to a medical facility as a precautionary measure. Once the count again goes above 100,000, he would be discharged,” said a BCCI source quoted by PTI.

Doubtful for India vs Pakistan match

It is worth noting that Shubman’s absence from the Men in Blue’s inaugural match of the ODI World Cup 2023 against Australia, attributed to health concerns, may have implications for his participation in upcoming India vs Pakistan encounter, scheduled for October 14 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Should the 24-year-old cricketer’s health fail to improve sufficiently, it is conceivable that he may not be available for this highly anticipated fixture.
