As anticipation builds for the Pakistan Super League 2024 (PSL) player draft, the cricket community is abuzz with excitement. With the upcoming season drawing near, former Pakistan cricketer and legendary figure in the sport, Wasim Akram, has offered valuable advice to Babar Azam on captaining in the league. Recently, the seasoned batter has decided to step down from the captain’s role of the Pakistan Cricket Team across all formats.

The bowling maestro’s guidance adds an insightful dimension to Babar’s captaincy journey, highlighting the multifaceted responsibilities of leading a team in a competitive cricket league. As fans eagerly await the unfolding of the PSL 2024, Akram’s words of wisdom have undoubtedly set the stage for an intriguing and closely watched season. It is worth noting that Akram has worked closely with Babar while giving his services as a coach to Karachi Kings in PSL 2022.

‘Take your money, play your game’: Wasim Akram on Babar Azam

Wasim recalled that he advised Babar to refrain from taking on captaincy roles in league cricket a couple of years ago. The latter suggested that as a big player, the right-handed batter should focus on playing his game, scoring runs, and enjoying the league without the added stress of captaincy. While considering Babar’s captaincy for the national side as acceptable, Akram cautioned against unnecessary stress in league cricket.

“I had a given an idea to Babar Azam a couple of years ago that don’t do captaincy in league cricket. You’re a Big player, take your money, play your game, get runs, go home, and then to the next event. Pakistan’s captaincy is alright, but the league brings extra stress without any reason,” Akram said during a discussion on Sportskeeda.

Babar Azam’s dismal leadership in PSL

Babar’s captaincy record in PSL raises concerns, with only six victories in 22 matches as skipper. The statistical performance suggests challenges in translating his leadership skills into consistent success in the PSL, highlighting an area for improvement in his skipper stint at the league level.
