The Brian Lara Stadium in Trinidad bore witness to an electrifying contest between the Trinbago Knight Riders and the Jamaica Tallawahs in the 22nd match of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2023 on Saturday. While the Knight Riders emerged victorious, it was a breathtaking moment of fielding brilliance by the Jamaican all-rounder, Fabian Allen, that sent shockwaves through the stadium.
Fabian Allen’s spectacular catch
The thrilling moment unfolded on the very first ball of the 16th over when the Knight Riders’ skipper, Kieron Pollard, faced a back-of-a-length delivery from Imad Wasim. Pollard, known for his explosive batting, smashed the ball towards deep mid-wicket with all his might. However, Allen, stationed in the deep, had other plans.
With lightning speed and impeccable timing, Allen sprinted in from the deep mid-wicket boundary, his eyes locked on the descending missile. In an awe-inspiring display of athleticism, he launched himself forward, fully stretched, and with one hand outstretched to his right, plucked the cricket ball out of the air just inches from the ground. The spectators, players, and even Pollard himself could hardly believe their eyes as the stadium erupted in cheers and applause for the jaw-dropping catch.

A Celebration that defied gravity
While the stadium was still reverberating with the roar of admiration for Allen’s phenomenal catch, the young Jamaican cricketer added another layer of amazement to the spectacle. After securing the catch, Allen didn’t indulge in the customary jubilation seen on the cricket field. Instead, he stood tall, his eyes fixed skyward, seemingly lost in a moment of quiet reflection.
His teammates rushed towards him, elated at the sensational catch and eager to celebrate the dismissal of a formidable opponent like Pollard. Yet, Allen remained in his unique trance-like state, gazing upwards, perhaps offering his gratitude to the cricketing gods or acknowledging a higher power. This distinctive celebration left an indelible mark on the match and will be remembered for years to come.

Knight Riders clinch victory
Despite Fabian Allen’s brilliance in the field, the outcome of the match favored the Trinbago Knight Riders. They went on to win by seven wickets, completing the chase in the 18th over. Nicholas Pooran and Martin Guptill were the stars of the Knight Riders’ innings, with Pooran scoring 54 runs off 35 balls and Guptill remaining unbeaten at 53 runs off 45 balls.
Earlier in the day, Imad showcased his all-round prowess for the Jamaica Tallawahs. He sizzled with the bat, contributing a blistering 62 runs off 33 balls, which propelled Jamaica to a total of 154/8 in their allotted 20 overs.
Notably, Saturday was the double header which also saw a contest between St Kitts & Nevis Patriots and Saint Lucia Kings where the Patriots registered a 4-wicket triumph.
