In a significant development for women’s cricket, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has disclosed that a robust total of 165 players have thrown their hats into the ring for the upcoming Women’s Premier League (WPL) auction. The auction, set for December 9 in Mumbai, is a crucial milestone for the second edition of the WPL, and the level of interest and participation is a testament to the league’s growing prominence.

Diverse player pool

The auction pool is composed of a diverse group of players, with 104 talented Indians and 61 overseas players, including 15 from associate nations. This international blend underscores the global appeal of women’s cricket and promises a thrilling competition among the best in the business.

High-profile players set the bar

Two standout players, West Indies’ Deandra Dottin and Australia’s Kim Garth, have set the bar high by placing themselves at the top tier with a base price of INR 50 lakh. This bold move not only underscores their confidence but also highlights the escalating value of players in the Women’s Premier League.

Available slots and overseas opportunities

With 30 slots available in total, each of the five teams has an opportunity to bolster their squads. The overseas players will also be vying for nine coveted spots, adding an extra layer of intrigue to the proceedings.

Gujarat Giants are heading into the 2024 WPL auction with the most substantial salary cap, a staggering INR 5.95 crore. This financial advantage positions them strategically, providing flexibility in securing key players during the auction.

On the flip side, defending champions Mumbai Indians find themselves with the smallest purse at INR 2.1 crore, setting the stage for a challenging task as they aim to retain their title in the upcoming WPL season.
